Ashtanga Yoga is a traditional system of postures performed in the same order every time. It was created by K. Pattabhi Jois, who is said to have learned the posture series from Krishnamacharya. Ashtanga Yoga can be a very challenging and long practice, often running about 90 minutes to 2 hours! However, thanks for David Swenson and his work in developing various "short forms" and several modification for each posture, Ashtanga Yoga is now very accessible to almost anyone. Our class will include the student's choice between 3 different sun salutations (very easy, moderate, or challenging), followed by a series of 26 traditional postures with several variations given to best fit the student's comfort level. We will NOT be using a vinyasa (sun salutation) between postures, so the challenge level of this class is about the same as our All Level Hatha Yoga class UNLESS you choose the more challenging forms of the postures. This is truly an all level class. Students will need to bring a Yoga block and a small hand towel to every class to best benefit from the modifications given. Bottled water is also advisable!
